I DON'T ft YG REVIEW // Rulo's World
The 90’s are emblazoned as an echo just as long as this
song goes. I’m talking about R Kelly, In Vogue, Jodeci, those classic R&B
jams. Mariah takes us back in time using Donell Jones’ sample as she ad libs
along to him in this radio sounding effect in the beggining and then YG brings
us back to the future. Sometimes it even sounds like a duet, like a brand new
memory.
Somewhere
in another life
We
stole a moment in time
Gave
you everything that you needed
I was
even down to repeat it
Said
you would always be mine
Feeding
me nothing but lies
I was
so gone, I admit it
Happy messed up for a minute
Mariah is using the Charmbracelet technique of layering but
in a more vivid way, not so whispery, and also the Memoirs echoing effects. YG
is this dude telling us the other part of the story, he’s just being that dude
denying that he’s being a playa. Then you hear the bass and the drums being so
modern and hot. Mimi has that husky and sexy MIAMTEC E=MC2 tone with catchy
lirics you could almost tell the entire song is the chorus part. Each section
is relatable and quote worthy.
But
I'm tired of cryin', no more tears
Pity
party of the year
Cold
at night cause you're not here
Leaving
you was my worst fear
I was
caught up, I was... blind
You
kept playin' with my... mind
Told
you I'm finished, gassed up the whip and...
Rear
view, bye
Now she’s also using the MOAIA type of singing, Standing O
like, serving that Tea. Here it comes: the part we’ll be singing with our hearts and
means so much for many since it’s a throwback to Donell’s jam with a twist:
Cause
when you love someone
You
just don't treat them bad
You
messed up all we had
Prolly
think I'm coming back
But I don't, I don't
The second verse is way deeper and it’s telling
us a story that we rather envision ourselves. There’s nothing too explicit, too
over the top in this song. It’s a subtle invitation to enjoy the music. Is she
talking about her ex fiancé James Packer or is she talking about another love?
Do we know? I don’t.
I
tried to make it work, no matter know how much it hurt
You
had to make it all about you
Tell
me why you go and do me like you do?
I
went from me and you
To
walking right out on you
I
know you want love, in your feelings
Frontin' on me like your love was the realest
YG comes in as the melody gets chilly to lets us
dive into the music, reminding us of The Roof's mid section. YG even throws some
shade bringing the spice. Then Mariah Carey bounces back on a higher note to
remind us of the hardcore part of the song. There is no drama about the vocals,
she is just telling it like it is. Her words are lit. She owns the r&b
melody keeping it fresh. This is strong like Side Effects but it is also sexy like
Slipping Away and intimate like CryBaby. If you don’t get into the story, if
you can’t relate to the soulful vibe, if the nostalgia moments don’t come to
your mind, this song is not for you.
Cause
when you love someone
You
just don't treat them bad
You
messed up all we had
Prolly
think I'm coming back
But I
don't, I don't
'Cause
boy I was buggin'
Thinkin'
somehow I could trust you
See,
I used to love you
But I
don't, I don't
'Cause
boy I was buggin'
Thinkin'
somehow I could trust you
But
you don't mean nothing
'Cause I don't, I don't...
Mariah is saying I DON’T instead of I DO, no we ain’t coming back. No I will
not marry you. #POW Then she goes away, you had your chance. You’ll ll hear the
word “bye” resounding in the background as the song slowly vanishes into the
air like cigarette smoke goes forever in a cold winter’s night.
